BASF celebrates the 25th anniversary of Ecoflex, the first commercially available, biodegradable and certified compostable biopolymer on the market. It has created new recycling options for plastics, enables organic recycling and thus supports the circular economy.
The biopolymer was introduced to the market in 1998 and is the world's first biodegradable and certified compostable plastic. BASF has continuously invested in Ecoflex and developed a biopolymer portfolio that is unrivalled in the industry. Ecoflex is now available in many different types of material, including Ecoflex F on a fossil basis and the partially bio-based variants Ecoflex FS and FG. All BASF PBAT variants are certified industrially compostable according to the strictest international regulations such as EN 13532, AS4736 and ASTM 6400. Ecoflex can also be degraded by microorganisms in home compost and agricultural soils (EN17033).
BASF copolyester is one of the few compostable polymers that fulfils the requirements of the European and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Ecoflex is the base polymer of the certified compostable plastic compound Ecovio.
„We are proud to be the pioneer in the biopolymer market that was already thinking about solutions for the circular economy when the term was not yet on everyone's lips. Since its launch 25 years ago, Ecoflex has delivered high quality and consistent performance to our customers and enabled many of the compostable applications on the market today. As a partner to major brands, we develop innovative packaging solutions based on Ecoflex that fulfil new market requirements. For example, this year we have launched new Ecovio grades that expand the end-of-life options for paper packaging, because they are both industrially and home compostable.“

Ecoflex is the ideal Blend partner for the production of plastics from renewable raw materials such as polylactic acid (PLA) and starch and thus makes many applications possible in the first place. Thanks to Ecoflex, BASF's Ecovio compound is characterised by special material properties such as flexibility and strength.
