BASF expands plastics recycling portfolio

With PuriCycle, BASF is launching products that enable the purification of pyrolysis oils from chemical plastics recycling.

Pyrolysis oils, which are produced as secondary raw materials during the chemical recycling of plastics, are often contaminated by other substances. With PuriCycle, BASF is now introducing catalysts and adsorbents that remove the impurities and enable the oils to be further processed and thus recycled.

BASF is launching PuriCycle, a new range of products for Purification of complex pyrolysis oils from plastic waste one. The PuriCycle portfolio includes innovative catalysts and adsorbents specifically designed for the selective removal or conversion of a wide range of impurities in pyrolysis oils, thus optimising the downstream process. Enable further processing of plastics according to the closed-loop principle. PuriCycle can help customers to fulfil industry standards with regard to the composition of pyrolysis oils.

PuriCycle is used to clean pyrolysis oils that are produced as a secondary raw material in chemical plastics recycling. After treatment, these can be fed back into the beginning of the value chain for the production of plastics be purified. The purification of pyrolysis oils produced from plastic waste is technically one of the most complex processes. Challenges in chemical plastics recycling. Impurities such as halogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur compounds as well as large quantities of reactive components such as dienes can make downstream utilisation more difficult and also significantly restrict the possibilities for further processing these product streams in the manufacture of new materials.

„With PuriCycle, we have an excellent product portfolio to improve the chemical recycling of plastics and enable a circular economy for plastics. As we can purify even the most complex pyrolysis oils with PuriCycle, we are making an important contribution to closing the loop for plastics. Our solution minimises waste and opens up new sources of raw materials for the chemical industry.“
