Beiersdorf is switching to 100 percent recycled aluminium cans for deodorant sprays. This initiative was implemented in collaboration with the Ball Corporation, involves well-known brands such as Nivea Men and selected 8×4 sprays and was brought from a pilot project to market maturity within a year.
Beiersdorf is pursuing ambitious sustainability goals and plans to become climate-neutral by 2045. The use of post-consumer aluminium (PCR) is a key component of this.
As a material, aluminium is particularly suitable for use in a circular economy, as it can be recycled indefinitely without losing any of its quality. The recycling process requires around 95 per cent less energy than primary production. According to Ball Corporation, around 75 percent of the aluminium ever produced is still in circulation, which underlines the efficiency and sustainability of this material.
Cooperation along the value chain
The cooperation between Beiersdorf and Ball Corporation demonstrates the importance of collaboration along the entire value chain in order to develop sustainable packaging solutions. It also supports Ball Corporation's goal of reducing absolute emissions by 55 per cent by 2030.
The switch to recycled aluminium cans is a signal to the entire industry to meet the increasing ecological expectations of consumers without compromising on quality or design.
This initiative should also serve as a model for other companies in the cosmetics industry that are also looking for ways to make their packaging more sustainable.
