Following the Bundesrat's statement on the Packaging Act, trade and industry are calling for the legislative process to be finalised swiftly before the end of this legislative period.
On the occasion of the presentation of the project „Central Agency Packaging Register“ emphasised by the shareholders of the project company Franz-Olaf Kallerhoff, Chairman of the Steering Committee of the BHIM Zentrale Wertstoffstelle Projektgesellschaft mbH and Chairman of the Management Board of Procter & Gamble Germany GmbH: „Following the opinion of the Bundesrat, there is now a tangible opportunity for a packaging law that ensures more recycling without exploding costs for companies and citizens. This can usher in an era of ecological competition with significant progress in environmental protection.“ Kallerhoff emphasised that the interests of business and local authorities must be taken into account equally in order to reach a workable compromise.
High-quality recycling
The Packaging Act is intended to significantly Higher quantities of packaging recycled to a high standard be realised. Packaging that is suitable for recycling should be promoted and consumers should be better informed. At the same time, the financing of packaging recycling can finally be put on a secure and fair footing: Every manufacturer of a packaged product is to register in a new register at a central office, and the consumer can view the register. The new central organisation will check whether manufacturers have registered their packaging quantities for recycling in accordance with the law.
