Borealis celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in March. The company is committed to the circular economy of plastics through innovation.

Borealis celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in March. The company was formed from the merger of Statoil and Neste and has established itself as a global supplier of polyolefins. The company aims to promote the circular economy of plastics with innovations and technologies.

Borealis is regularly ranked as Austria's top innovator in the European Patent Index and has an extensive portfolio of patents. Patent portfolio with around 8,900 granted patents. In Europe in particular, the Borealis has been shaping the industrial landscape for decades by investing heavily in its plants and creating thousands of highly skilled jobs in the communities in which the company operates.

Building on its proprietary technologies and more than 50 years of experience with polyolefins, the company supports key industries with plastic raw materials for a wide range of applications. Applications in the consumer goods, energy, healthcare, infrastructure and mobility sectors.

Borealis utilises Technological innovations to enhance polyolefin-based applications, The aim is to make production processes more resource-efficient and accelerate the recyclability of plastics. Since the commissioning of the first Borstar PE plant in Porvoo, Finland, in 1995, the proprietary multimodal technology for the production of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) has been a cornerstone of the company's success. Since then, Borstar has been joined by other technology brands, such as Borlink, the innovation for the power cable industry, Borstar Nextension Technology, which includes the Production of monomaterial applications for recycling facilitated, Borcycle M technology for mechanical recycling, which breathes new life into polyolefin-based post-consumer waste and transforms it into high-quality applications with a lower CO2-footprint.

Projects beyond Europe

With the strong support of its two majority shareholders OMV (Austria) and The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC, UAE), Borealis continues to expand its global footprint to become a fully customer-centric provider of advanced and sustainable polymer solutions in key sectors such as energy, mobility, consumer goods and infrastructure. The Borouge joint venture, established in the United Arab Emirates in 1998 and listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) since 2022, is one of the largest integrated polyolefins complexes in the world. It is currently producing the The company's largest growth project realised: Borouge 4, the new USD 6.2 billion plant in Ruwais, which will supply customers in the Middle East and Asia. In North America, the Baystar joint venture established in 2017 and operated with partner TotalEnergies included the construction of a new ethane cracker and the most modern Borstar plant ever built outside Europe. The state-of-the-art, USD 1.4 billion Borstar 3G PE plant in Pasadena, Texas, was commissioned in late 2023, bringing Borstar to this continent for the first time. Borealis' commitment to Europe as a production location is underlined by the new, Borealis plant currently under construction in Kallo, Belgium, underlined.

A common mission statement - We Care, We're Curious, We Progress - governs all aspects of the company's operations and unites a multicultural and diverse group of employees from around 120 countries. Sustainability is embedded in all of Borealis' efforts, from research and development to production, from procurement to stakeholder engagement and decarbonisation. By 2030, 100 per cent of the electricity used to operate its own production sites in Europe will come from renewable sources. Borealis will reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from 5.1 million tonnes/year (base year 2019) to below 2 million tonnes in 2030.

Borealis also strives to be one of the safest companies in the petrochemical industry. The company is committed to „Zero Harm“ and aims to become the industry leader in Health, Safety, Security, and the Environment (HSSE) by 2030. The company is a signatory to progressive initiatives such as the recent Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal, which aims to minimise the Restoring the industry's competitiveness, to secure jobs in Europe while supporting the objectives of the European Green Deal. Borealis is also committed to upholding the principles of key international initiatives such as the Circular Plastics Alliance and the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty. The Borealis Social Fund seeks to improve the social wellbeing of the communities in which Borealis operates; one important programme is Project Stop, which works to prevent plastic from entering the marine environment in Indonesia. Borealis and Borouge's Water for the World initiative contributes to solving the global water and sanitation challenge in rural and urban communities in Southeast Asia and Africa.
