At interpack, United Caps presented Bump Cap, a closure designed to reduce food waste. It makes it possible to exceed the best-before date, which is currently set over-cautiously, without risk to the consumer. Palpable bumps form on the top of the cap as soon as the expiry date has passed.

Formerly known as Mimica Touch, the cap consists of a cap base, a cap top and a bump, all produced by United Caps. The activator and gel are from Mimica. Last up is a lidding film that is actually smooth but forms small bumps when the packaged beverage is no longer suitable for consumption.

The bump cap arrives at the filling line in two parts. The first is the cap base, which has been tested by leading filling line manufacturers and only requires minor modifications to the line, and the second is the bump cap. The latter is in this phase is already equipped with the bump surface, the gel and the activator and is applied after filling with a special machine. Like other modules, for example for labelling or film wrapping, this machine can be easily integrated into production.

The fastener, on the upper side of which the tactile humps are formed, is automatically activated by the consumer, when the cap is opened for the first time with a twisting motion. As long as the surface of the cap is smooth, the drink is still fresh. However, if the film feels bumpy to the touch, this is a clear sign to the consumer that the expiry date has passed.

„The market has reacted very positively to the bump cap in all segments. This product can set new standards for the global prevention of food waste and for greater food safety. It also fits seamlessly into the sustainable solutions we offer for lids and closure systems.“

Benoit Henckes, CEO of United Caps

The bump cap has already been tested on consumers with orange juice. These tests were supported by the EU organisation EIT Food. The Bump Cap closure was developed on the basis of the results obtained, among other things honoured with the EIT Food Marketed Innovation Prize.
