Capri-Sun has replaced its film drinking bag with a recyclable mono-material plastic drinking bag. It will initially be launched in the UK and then gradually rolled out across Europe. In the long term, the company aims to convert more than two billion drink pouches sold across Europe each year to recyclable packaging.

Capri-Sun is taking another step towards greater sustainability with the launch of its new recyclable drinking pouch. The pouch is made entirely of recyclable plastic (mono-material polypropylene) instead of the previous non-recyclable pouch, which is made up of laminated layers of aluminium, PE and PET. Like the current bag the mono-material bag weighs only one fifth of a PET bottle of the same content, but will reduce CO2 emissions by 25 per cent compared to its predecessor.

This innovation and its market launch in the UK are an important step in Capri-Sun's journey, to switch the entire range of beverages to fully recyclable packaging. As soon as the new drinking bag is introduced throughout Europe in the next few years, it will help to prevent many tonnes of aluminium from ending up in landfill every year. In recent years, the brand has already switched from plastic to paper straws, uses only FSC-certified cardboard for its multipacks and sells its entire syrup range in bottles made from 100 per cent rPET (recycled PET). Capri-Sun has also made a commitment, to make its production climate-neutral.

In the UK, the 200-millilitre retail pouches in Orange and Blackcurrant & Apple flavours are the first products in the range to be available in mono-material polypropylene packaging. Capri-Sun will be converting its entire 330-millilitre range across Europe this year. The conversion of the large, resealable pouches to recyclable mono-material will take place as part of the introduction of the fastened lid in accordance with EU Directive 2019/904. With the introduction of the fastened lid, Capri-Sun will also achieve 14 per cent material savings compared to the previous lid.
