By its own admission, Capri-Sun wants to become the „most sustainable children's drinks brand in the world“. On the way to achieving this, the company is now introducing a paper straw.
Declared goal for Capri-Sun is to offer the popular fruit juice drink in a portion pack in fully recyclable packaging by 2025 at the latest to offer. Following extensive development work, a more environmentally friendly alternative to the existing plastic drinking straws is being introduced.
Production in Eppelheim is currently being converted to the new paper straw. The changeover at the plant near Heidelberg, which supplies several million pouches of the fruit juice drink to German and large parts of the European retail trade every day, is due to be completed by May.

The company is thus fulfilling the EU Commission's requirements as planned, according to which disposable plastic utensils such as drinking straws and coffee cups may no longer be placed on the market from July.
„The new drinking straw fulfils the hygienic requirements and is neutral in taste. It also provides a pleasant drinking sensation and does not release any fibres. It was also important to us that the Handling remains flawless works so that the well-known Capri-Sun drinking pleasure remains as great as ever.“ Roland Weening, CEO Capri-Sun
The new paper straw is white, The use of colourants is not necessary. It is made from FSC-certified raw materials and fulfils all the quality criteria mentioned. „Extensive tests with consumers, including many children, confirmed this before the launch,“ explains Julia Straschil, Global Brand Director at Capri-Sun. Added to this is the positive feedback from Portugal, where the company has been supplying Capri-Sun with paper straws since last autumn.
Capri-Sun cooperates with OneTreePlanted
In addition, Capri-Sun has committed to planting the same number of trees as are needed for the production of its paper straws. To this end, the company has entered into a partnership with OneTreePlanted agreed. „In this way, we not only want to replace used resources, but also contribute to a better carbon footprint as a global brand,“ says Straschil.
