Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company (CMBC) is taking measures to make its production more sustainable by investing the equivalent of more than 11.5 million euros in the modernisation of its filling and packaging facilities.
With the energy-efficient Innofill Can DVD high-performance filler and the resource-saving Innopack Kisters Nature MultiPack (NMP) packaging machine, two new KHS machines are playing a role at the Northampton site. The results are a more efficient production and the reduction of expected water and plastic consumption.
„Energy-efficient machines and systems as well as safe and environmentally friendly packaging solutions are key components of our sustainability strategy. With the renewed investment in our pioneering packaging solution and the trust placed in our flexible can filler, we are proud to be a reliable partner alongside CMBC on the path to responsible climate protection.“
Edgar-George Petsche, Executive Vice President Market Zone Europe at KHS.
Successfully marketed in the UK under the name Snap Pack, the Nature MultiPack holds beverage cans together to form a solid pack with just a few dots of adhesive. Since its introduction five years ago, 65 per cent of the brewery's small multipacks had already been packaged in this format by the end of 2022. This makes them the brewery's most frequently used packaging type for four- and six-pack multipacks, The company also produces popular beers such as Carlsberg Danish Pilsner, San Miguel, Birrificio Angelo Poretti and Brooklyn Pilsner, to name just a few of the well-known brands.
Increased capacity
CMBC's recent investment in another second-generation Innopack Kisters NMP packer will enable the company to increase its processing capacity of up to 108,000 cans per hour doubling the number of packs produced. With the planned switch to the snap pack for all multipacks and thus the elimination of previously used plastic rings, CMBC aims to reduce its plastic consumption by up to 76 per cent. During the realisation the new universal adhesive from KHS will already be in use. The one-fits-all solution that has been realised enables bottlers to form the optimum NMP pack for all common formats and sizes. It works on almost all top coats of both aluminium and tinplate cans.

Lower water consumption thanks to new KHS filler
The technology of the Innofill Can DVD increases the efficiency and operational reliability of the filling line and is convincing in combination with the Innofill Can DVD. with the FS14 can seamer from the Swiss company Ferrum, which is equipped with a double lid feeder. In addition to an output of up to 90,000 cans per hour in the 0.33-, 0.44- and 0.5-litre formats, the flexible KHS filler scores points with its particularly small hygienic area, which ensures an optimum and targeted flow of sterile air around the sensitive zone. Including the two KHS machines, which are helping to modernise the brewery, CMBC estimates that it will be able to reduce its water consumption by up to 10 percent each year. This corresponds to a reduction of around 18 million litres per year.
Global commitment to sustainability
Upgrading its production facilities is part of CMBC's ongoing efforts to become more sustainable. As part of its ESG strategy „Together Towards ZERO & Beyond“, the British brewery has set itself ambitious targets. These include a CO2-neutrality by 2030 and more efficient water consumption of two hectolitres for every hectolitre of beer produced in all breweries.
