Chespa has entered into a partnership with Asahi Photoproducts and Esko to offer its customers high-barrier film-based, biodegradable and compostable packaging. Chespa's plant-based water-based inks, new systems from Esko and CO2neutral water-washable plates from Asahi Photoproducts are used.
The Chespa watercolours used are made from produced from renewable raw materials and generate 35 per cent less eCO2/kg. They contain up to 40 percent solids compared to 1 percent for standard colours. The colours are available in Biodegradable in household waste as well as in industrial plants and compostable. The programme, developed in cooperation with Asahi and Esko project, in which sustainable substrates and colours as well as CO2 neutral printing plates The results were tested with a chocolate pack using Chespa's FlexiBio water-based inks and a pack of peanut-based products using Chespa's FlexiEco water-based inks. The manufacturers reported that they were satisfied with the quality achieved by using Chespa's speciality inks, a sustainable substrate, Esko's high-quality screens and CO2 neutral AWPTM panels from Asahi.
„Our brand owner customer chose a sustainable paper substrate with barrier coatings for the packaging of their products due to its barrier to oxygen, water, flavours and grease as well as its suitability for heat sealing. An additional requirement was, of course, the ability to print high quality graphics on the surface using Asahi's sustainable, water-washable AWPTM plates, our water-based inks and Esko's latest Crystal V anilox technology. The manufacturers were delighted with the result and we look forward to working with Asahi Photoproducts to provide printed samples on their drupa stand using our inks on this unique and sustainable substrate. Chespa is also proud to have been recognised with an FTA sustainability award for the water-based inks used in this project, which are made from renewable raw materials.“

Chespa's FlexiLack FX Barrier barrier coating, which is used under the name FlexiLack FX Barrier Paper is a high-performance metallised compostable film, which consists of four layers: a cellulose film coated on top and bottom with a special coating and a top layer of a printable metallised surface. It combines optical properties with improved barrier and deadfold capabilities. Target applications include twist wrap and flow wrap packaging of confectionery, bakery and non-food products. This packaging is ideal for premium labelling applications and is compatible with cold seals. The project is aimed at brand owners who want to achieve the highest sustainability goals while maintaining the functional packaging barrier properties required for this type of food application.
