Parkside, a British manufacturer of flexible packaging, has developed a new packaging for Bird & Blend loose tea bags that is fully compostable.
The new packaging for the loose tea bags from Bird & Blend, which are themselves already plastic-free, consists of made of paper and metallised NatureFlex cellulose film from Futamura, which is made from sustainably sourced wood pulp.
According to the manufacturer, the packaging offers good barrier performance, which helps to extend the shelf life of the loose tea bags. The cellulose film should dissolve completely within 26 weeks, depending on the efficiency of the composting process.
„The steps taken by Bird & Blend reflect what we are seeing in the packaging sector, namely that consumers want clear measures with which they can play their part in protecting the environment. Compostable packaging is a good approach in this respect.“ Staci Bye, New Business Development Manager at Parkside
Matt Hendon, Operations Manager at Bird & Blend, adds: „As a company, we recognise that our industry is sometimes under scrutiny when it comes to sustainability. Our tea bags are already plastic-free, so the next step was to also improve the environmental compatibility of our packaging.“
Parkside has been conducting research and development into compostable laminates for almost a decade and offers Over 20 TÜV-certified compostable films as part of its Park2Nature-series.
