According to a consumer study commissioned by Bericap, the majority of consumers surveyed rated the ClipAside tethered caps more favourably than conventional closures.

According to a consumer study commissioned by Bericap, the majority of consumers surveyed rated the ClipAside tethered caps more favourably than conventional closures.

The ClipAside tethered caps connected to the drinks bottle not only fulfil EU Directive 2019/904 for better recyclingThey also impress users in practical use and are rated more favourably than conventional closures by the majority of consumers surveyed.

This was the result of a consumer study commissioned by Bericap, in which consumers aged between 18 and 80 and their families tested the new caps on 1.5-litre mineral water bottles in their everyday lives for a week. The users particularly praised intuitive, easy handling when opening, closing and drinking, as well as better hygiene. Unlike conventional closures, the lid cannot fall to the floor and get dirty.

It also ensures that the lid is securely attached to the bottle, that the caps remain with the bottles in the plastic recycling process. However, many end consumers are not yet aware of the environmental benefits of tethered caps, which will be mandatory for non-returnable drinks bottles of up to three litres from July 2024: but as soon as they are aware of them - for example through information on the bottle label - they also rate the sustainability aspect as valuable.

The very good user experience with the ClipAside-Closure also has a positive effect on the perception of the beverage brand and customer loyalty. The first well-known customers from the carbonated soft drinks, mineral water and juice sectors have already introduced the Bericap ClipAside to the market.

Tried and tested in practice

Most users rated the ClipAside better than conventional bottle caps in many respects and recommended it to others, not least because it combines the advantages of screw and SnapCap closures.

„The consumer study has confirmed that the ClipAside offers other benefits for users in addition to the recycling benefits in everyday life. The ClipAside design was equally convincing on all levels: in terms of handling, convenience, hygiene and sustainability - but also due to its robustness in everyday use. If the ease of use is right for the user, this also has a positive impact on the beverage brands. Beverage producers that are already switching to tethered caps can position themselves as customer-orientated, innovative and sustainably committed brands.“

Thomas Schmidt, Group Marketing Director of Bericap

The greatest benefits experienced by end consumers were the ease of use of the ClipAside. As the new closure hardly differs visually from the previously used screw caps, most people were able to open the bottles intuitively - without prior knowledge and without having to look for instructions on the bottle. Only a few study participants had to familiarise themselves with the new closure systems and did not know, for example, that they did not have to remove the cap from the bottle. But by the time they opened the third bottle at the latest, almost all of the testers were familiar with the „twist and flip to the side“ mechanism. Clearly visible instructions on the bottle label can explain handling and thus address any questions that may arise in advance.

Robust solution for hygiene and health

The fact that the cap is attached to the bottle was also rated positively by the study participants for hygienic and health reasons, also because the cap cannot be lost. Likewise 100 per cent leak-proof during transport and storage after repeated opening and reclosing score points with consumers. The attached lids can be opened up to 180 degrees and fixed in place so that pouring and drinking directly from the bottle is no problem. And even an endurance test after being opened 30 times was unable to detach the lid from the bottle.

As the study showed, many users did not realise the environmental benefits of tethered caps. This shows, that the communication of beverage manufacturers on the new closures is of great importance. Providing more striking information about the benefits and correct use on the label can contribute to better education and a positive brand image for beverage manufacturers.

Bericap has created the technical prerequisites for the beverage industry to for all relevant bottle neck finishes from 26 to 38 mm can be easily and flexibly converted to the new closure system at any time can: This means that customers can already adapt their filling systems to the new cap dimensions today and then decide whether to initially produce caps equipped with a current TE band or already use the new tethered caps. Converting the TE band geometry to the tethered caps then requires no further adjustments to the filling line.

This is also advantageous for beverage producers from non-European countries, where the introduction of tethered caps is not yet mandatory from 2024, but could be in the future.
