Mondi and Scan Sverige have been working on mono-material packaging for foods such as ham, sausage and vegetable cold cuts. The polypropylene packaging is suitable for recycling and keeps products fresh with a high oxygen barrier.

Mondi's WalletPack is a PP-based solution designed for recyclability. This packaging has been specifically developed with recycling in mind and is in line with the customers' objectives and the NPA's vision. WalletPack can be effectively sorted by Site Zero, Europe's largest and most modern plastic recycling plant in Sweden, and thus contributes to a circular economy. The packaging replaces the previous solution, a non-recyclable multi-material, which consisted of PET-PE and PA-PE laminates.

WalletPack is equipped with a top and bottom film and has a simple peel-off mechanism that guarantees consumer convenience. The packaging was designed with a protective, high oxygen barrier for a longer shelf life in combination with internal printing, and also offers good printability to convey the brand and product messages.

„It has been a pleasure to work with Scan Sverige, who have contributed more than a century of experience in responsible Swedish food production. The team closely follows the entire value chain from farm to fork, which harmonises perfectly with our values. Throughout the process, we focused on the same clear goals: to protect the food in the best possible way and at the same time develop packaging that is suitable for recycling in terms of sustainability.“

Einar Ahlstrom, Materials Specialist at NPA explains: „Multilayer laminates, such as PET/PE and PA/PE, are often used in various flexible plastic packaging, which limits the potential for material recycling. To promote and support more efficient material recycling, a Move towards the use of monomaterials in plastic packaging required. It is encouraging to see that Scan Sverige, in co-operation with Mondi, has launched a new packaging solution for Pärsons. This alternative not only replaces conventional multilayer laminates, but is also beneficial for material recycling.“ About two years ago, Scan Sverige and Mondi began discussions on the recently launched mono-material-based packaging. Both worked closely together from the beginning with clearly defined goals to develop the WalletPack solution for Pärsons efficiently and carefully.

„Mondi's WalletPacks will be used in a wide range of sliced products for Pärsons. We knew that Mondi was the right partner to achieve our goals. And we are pleased to see that the new solution can be used efficiently on our existing machines. Our ambition is to take a forward-thinking approach to packaging sustainability as we aim for 100 per cent recyclable packaging by the end of 2025 and are working hard to transition to recyclable mono-materials.“
