Packaging manufacturer Coveris is expanding its production capacity for barrier films to include the manufacture of skin film packaging. The expansion goes hand in hand with a multi-million euro investment in Coveris' specialised extrusion plant in Winsford, UK, the country's largest extrusion plant for polyethylene (PE) films.
The investment at the Coveris Winsford site includes the construction of a dedicated production hall and the installation of state-of-the-art skin film processing equipment. For the production of skin film packaging, Coveris Winsford utilises the market-leading co-extrusion capacities and the Know-how from the production of 9-layer EVOH barrier films for the meat, fish and dairy industries.
Skin film packaging is characterised by the fact that it encloses the product like a skin and offers a high-quality appearance that is appreciated by consumers. Due to the performance characteristics of skin films compared to conventional packaging formats, retailers can offer their products at a lower price. Up to 25 days longer shelf life and greater product safety calculate. Coveris skin films are validated on the most important standard skin packaging lines and can be applied to PE, PET, PP, aluminium and cardboard.
Coveris Winsford specialises in promoting innovation and has a Film Science Lab and technology experts for the development, optimisation and validation of award-winning films. An innovation project is currently underway with the aim of, reduce the material thickness of the skin films to below the industry average, to maximise benefits while minimising environmental impact.
