Coveris aims to close the plastics loop by utilising various recycling technologies. The company relies on a combination of mechanical, chemical and solvent-based recycling to ensure the quality of post-consumer recyclate (PCR) for various applications.

As part of the ReCover initiative, Coveris has made significant investments in recycling technologies and established partnerships to address packaging waste in various sectors such as industrial, medical, household and food. At the upcoming Plastics Recycling Show Europe (PRSE) 2026, the company will showcase several packaging solutions based on PCR produced through advanced mechanical recycling and de-inking technologies.

A central element of this initiative is the development of the COtooCLEAN pilot plant in collaboration with Nextek, which focuses on solvent-based recycling. This technology makes it possible to remove impurities from plastic waste and thus improve the quality of the recyclate.

Chemical recycling for regulated sectors

In addition to mechanical recycling, Coveris is also investing in chemical recycling solutions, which are particularly important for highly regulated sectors. One example of this is a proof-of-concept project developed together with partners such as Sabic and the Zuyderland Medical Centre. This project aims to convert hospital waste into new medical packaging and thus create a closed recycling loop.

Challenges and opportunities

The combination of different recycling methods opens up new opportunities to increase efficiency and sustainability in the packaging industry. Mechanical recycling is particularly suitable for applications where the quality of the recyclate is less critical, while chemical and solvent-based recycling can be used for applications with higher quality requirements.

With its initiatives, Coveris shows that the integration of different technologies is an effective way to meet the challenges of the circular economy. The advances presented at PRSE 2026 could set new standards for sustainable packaging solutions.
