Coveris is implementing the design guidelines of the Healthcare Plastic Recycling Council and is presenting two particularly easily recyclable mono-material solutions at Compamed, the Flexopeel T and Formpeel T films. They offer the same functionality and safety as conventional solutions and at the same time help to reduce packaging and product waste.
„For us at Coveris sustainability is one of the most important development and innovation factors for medical device packaging. We have therefore geared our entire strategy towards a no-waste vision. We are convinced that avoiding waste of all kinds is the basis for a more sustainable future„, explains Jan-Willem Bruijsten, Segment Lead Medical at Coveris. „That's why we offer recyclable packaging made from a single polyolefin solution that extends shelf life while helping to reduce product waste. In addition, all Coveris plants use as much renewable energy as possible and focus on post-industrial recycling to minimise production waste.“
Longer shelf life and easier differentiation
Visitors to Compamed will be able to see Coveris' new sustainability strategy for themselves and learn about the benefits of a Three-edge sealed pouches made of uncoated Tyvek 1073B from DuPont in combination with the new Flexopeel T pouch film from Coveris convince. This packaging solution ensures optimum all-round protection and is characterised by good puncture resistance.
The packaged medical products are also easier to recognise thanks to the high transparency of the Flexopeel T film. This PE-based monofilm is ideal for ETO sterilisation as well as for plasma and gamma irradiation, as medical devices can be removed easily and sterilely thanks to the soft and fibre-free peel. The expertise of the R&D department at Coveris Flexopeel T also has a shelf life of up to 10 years, depending on the individual product properties.
Coveris is part of the SBA (Sterile Barrier Association) working group that is developing new symbols for labelling packaging. They are looking for new solutions to make it easier for healthcare professionals to correctly differentiate between critical recyclable packaging. The aim of the new labelling system is to record recyclability and material origin at a glance in order to avoid product waste.
Greater flexibility and easier sealing
Coveris has developed a special packaging solution for customers in the medical sector who pack medical products in bulk packs using form-fill-seal (FFS) machines. It consists of uncoated Tyvek 1073B on a thermoformable mono-material carrier - the Formpeel T film. The main advantage of this PE material is that it can be produced with a thickness of 100 µm to 350 µm.
This flexibility in packaging thickness makes this film the perfect solution for a wide range of applications (from very flexible to semi-rigid packaging) and the ideal replacement for standard A-PET or PET-G films. Another advantage of Formpeel T is its low shrinkage and good mouldability. Thanks to the soft and fibre-free peel, the Formpeel T is easy to seal and can be perfectly combined with various types of Tyvek. Our innovative packaging solution is also ideal for ETO sterilisation and gamma irradiation.
Coveris is on the Compamed in Düsseldorf at Stand C56 in Hall 14 from 15 to 18 November.
