Greiner Packaging and Borealis have developed a drinking cup made of chemically recycled polypropylene for the iced coffee of the Swiss dairy company Emmi.
The European brand for chilled coffee drinks, Emmi Caffè Latte, will soon be available in cups made from chemically recycled polypropylene. Greiner Packaging produces these cups and purchases the chemically recycled material from Borealis, a provider of recyclable polyolefin solutions based in Vienna, Austria.
The dairy company Emmi is pursuing the goal of making all of its packaging 100 per cent recyclable. Along the way, it has made various commitments to promote the circular economy, including a recyclate content of 30 per cent in its packaging by 2027. With its focus on recyclable packaging and the use of recycled materials, the company is now taking a first step with the Emmi Caffè Latte brand.
Caffè latte mug made of chemically recycled polypropylene
From September 2021, the Emmi brand will source at least 100 tonnes of plastic from recycled material every year. Chemical recycling turns used plastic into reusable plastic: recyclates are produced that can be used again and again. the same purity value as fossil PP and are therefore also suitable for food-safe applications. In this way, Emmi utilises plastics that are difficult to recycle and avoids plastic waste that would otherwise be destined for landfill or incineration. In future, the proportion of recycled plastic in Emmi Caffè Latte packaging is set to increase further, depending on the availability of suitable materials.
The technology for recovering polypropylene is new. According to Greiner Packaging and Borealis, they are playing a pioneering role in its ongoing development. Currently Only limited quantities of chemically recycled PP available and Emmi is one of the few food manufacturers to have secured a share of recycled PP plastic through early support and long-term cooperation with development partners.
„In order to reduce waste and make measurable progress towards a circular economy, joint efforts by food and packaging manufacturers are necessary.“ Bendicht Zaugg, responsible for sustainable packaging at Emmi.

Making the switch to a circular polyolefin economy
„The chemically recycled polypropylene in the new Emmi Caffè Latte cups is produced with the Borcycle C-Borealis' new polyolefins range, which is produced in transformative chemical recycling processes and repurposes post-consumer polyolefin-based waste. It offers numerous advantages and enables the switch to a circular polyolefin economy, where new plastic products are created. We also want to accelerate the transition to a circular economy in the future.“ Trevor Davis, Head of Marketing, Consumer Products at Borealis
The chemically recycled material in the cups for Emmi Caffè Latte is ISCC PLUS-certified (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) and corresponds to the mass balance approach. This is a method that makes it possible to track the quantity and sustainability characteristics of circular and/or bio-based materials in the value chain and at every stage of the process. This also provides consumers with the necessary transparency and allows them to trust that the products they buy are made from this renewable material.
