Speciality paper manufacturer Delfort and packaging specialist Rieusset, a Gerosa Group company, have joined forces to offer a new, paper-based packaging for ice cream. It is already available in German grocery shops and is now to be sold in other European countries.

The Thinbarrier 201 primarily protects against moisture, but also against loss of flavour. The specially developed barriers help to prevent freezer burn and dehydration. „This means that the ice cream retains its quality, flavour and consistency throughout its entire life cycle,“ says Peter Hackl, Head of Packaging at Delfort. The Thinbarrier 201 packaging paper is also recyclable. The Recyclability is tested according to the CEPI method and confirmed; the virgin fibres used come from sustainable forestry and the pulp suppliers are FSC and PEFC certified.

„We opted for the material because it offers excellent barrier properties and at the same time fulfils our eco-design guidelines and sustainability requirements.“

The Gerosa Group processes the Thinbarrier 201 from Delfort into a heat-sealable tubular bag packaging that is printed using the gravure printing process. becomes. „The paper can be processed perfectly on the existing machines,“ says Guillem Pérez González. The running properties on the packaging machine and the appearance of the print are among the biggest challenges when switching to paper-based packaging. „There is often a lot of scepticism at first, especially in our customers“ production departments - until the teams work with the paper themselves and realise how easy it is to process," says Joaquin Vidal Domene, Head of Technology, Research & Development at Rieusset.
