Dematic has automated two Weiss Technik GmbH sites with stand-alone AutoStore systems. The system in Lindenstruth, Hesse, has nine travelling robots that handle the transport, storage and retrieval of around 13,400 containers. The system at the site in Balingen, Baden-Württemberg, has space for around 6,300 containers.
The compact piece goods picking systems are characterised in particular by a high storage density and automate both production supply and spare parts despatch at Weiss Technik. The energy-efficient systems are controlled and operated via the SAP WM warehouse management software, which Dematic has seamlessly integrated into the existing ERP systems. Both systems have already gone into operation.
„Despite the severely disrupted global supply chains that every company relies on, we managed to complete the double order for Weiss Technik on time and on budget, which is excellent given the challenges of today.“
Winnie Ahrens, Sales Director DACH at Dematic.

The specialist for intelligent automation has installed two high-performance AutoStore systems that make optimum use of the available space and offer a wide range of storage and expansion options. Weiss Technik uses these for the storage of small parts for the manufacture of larger systems. The company uses the systems to automate its entire material flow in heating, air conditioning and pharmaceutical technology including the dispatch of spare parts, thus ensuring the best possible supply for production.
The newly installed system in Lindenstruth has a storage capacity of around 13,400 bins. These are also subdivided into additional compartments so that they can hold different items. Nine mobile robots operate on the surface, automatically accessing the containers as soon as the goods they contain are requested. They then transport the items automatically to the picking station ports.
The picked items are made available for internal transport via a roller conveyor and then transported to the respective production areas. In this way unnecessary walking distances and secondary activities by employees are avoided. In addition, there is no need to refill goods, which saves additional time.
Dematic has installed an AutoStore with around 6,300 containers at the Balingen site. Niko Hoffmann, project engineer at Weiss Technik, explains: „As a result the systems should lead to a significantly higher picking performance with a lower error rate at the same time.“ Several stabilisation towers ensure smooth operation in one of the highest earthquake zones in Germany. The stabilisation towers are installed together with the AutoStore and the grid is fixed to them. Dematic is assuming the role of general contractor.
According to Hoffmann, another important criterion in the decision was that the solution should be scalable and can also be expanded during operation without major restrictions can. Additional bin locations can be easily realised via grid extensions. Additional robots can also be integrated quickly.
The energy efficiency of the system was another plus point in the award of the contract. This is due not least to recovering the energy generated when the robots brake and when the containers are lowered. are created. Energy costs are also reduced as the AutoStore requires less space and therefore less building space needs to be maintained.
According to Hoffmann, the cooperation is to be intensified in the near future. A framework agreement has already been concluded with the Schunk Group, the holding company of Weiss Technik. AutoStore solutions are also to be installed here.
