Toothbrush tablets are a sustainable alternative to toothpaste. Two students at Stuttgart Media University have now realised a clever packaging concept for a dental care set consisting of tablets and a toothbrush with great attention to detail that stands out at the PoS. Their Piranha Bites have won them two prestigious packaging awards.

Emma Schüttoff and Kevin Semjancuk are studying in their sixth semester in the Bachelor's degree programme in Packaging Technology at the Stuttgart Media University. Together, they came up with the idea for unusual packaging for a dental care set.

"Toothpaste, like soap or shampoo, contains a lot of water, while toothpaste tablets are a product in concentrated form. Our little Piranha can therefore hold as much toothpaste as three conventional tubes. However, our idea was not simply to replace plastic with a fibre-based solution, but to develop a holistic concept that is sustainable overall." Kevin Semjancuk

The combination of product and packaging with a successful functional design also appealed to the jury of this year's Pida Awards, which honoured Piranha Bites with the prize for innovation ("Highest Level of Innovation"). The transfer of the concept from a piranha with its sharp teeth to a packaging set for toothpaste tablets and a toothbrush convinced the judges. The products have found their packaging here, they said in their statement.

Similarly, the the judgement of the jury of the German Packaging Award award. The plastic-free packaging concept stood out from this year's submissions thanks to both its unusual conceptualisation and its loving implementation, and stood out from this year's submissions with its harmonious design and elegant execution. This was recognised with a packaging award in the young talent category.

Packaging stands out at the PoS

Piranha Bites playfully combines the packaging with the contents.

"Our packaging also offers advantages for marketing, as the tablets were previously packaged rather inconspicuously. In the Piranha packaging, toothbrushes and dental care tablets can now be presented in a completely new way at the PoS and stand out."

The packaging itself consists only of the Cardboard blank, which is glued at some points with a water-soluble adhesive. The two budding packaging technicians produced the samples in their university laboratory and tinkered until the packaging was easy to handle. In particular, the dispenser on the piranha mouth had to work well, as the mini slipcase is opened to remove a tablet. One Perforation on the dispenser also ensures first-opening protection.

Unlike other concepts, her packaging idea was not developed in a semester project. Emma Schüttoff and Kevin Semjancuk developed Piranha Bites on their own initiative - from the idea to the finished sample in around two months. There has already been a lot of positive feedback on LinkedIn and other channels in response to the two packaging awards.
