Using the Design2Market approach, Smurfit Westrock developed a new packaging solution together with Frittenwerk in a very short space of time. The delivery box was specially designed for the transport of so-called poutines by bicycle courier and was created in just six weeks.
Poutine is a Canadian dish consisting of crispy fries, cheesy cheese curds and savoury gravy. In combination with creative toppings, it is becoming increasingly popular. especially as a take-away option. But this was precisely the challenge: how can you transport four hot poutines with sauces in such a way that they arrive at the customer undamaged and appetising?
The newly developed box is made of cardboard and designed specifically for transport in bike rucksacks. Pre-folding in the restaurant enables quick and efficient handling. Ventilation holes ensure that the fries stay crispy, while clever internal partitions prevent the poutines and sauces from slipping.
The developers were inspired by a variety of existing packaging solutions - from classic pizza and burger boxes to punch bowls and high-quality gift packaging. Because In addition to functionality, design also played a decisive roleThe packaging should not only be practical, but also present Frittenwerk's high-quality creations in a visually appealing way.
Agile development in the shortest possible time
The packaging was created as part of a Design2Market project - an agile development process developed by Smurfit Westrock specifically for fast, market-orientated innovations. The complete packaging solution was designed, tested and optimised in just six weeks. A key success factor was the strong commitment of both partners. Thanks to a structured design sprints With five targeted meetings, each of which involved the relevant stakeholders, the packaging was without unnecessary feedback loops efficiently to market maturity. The meetings only lasted 45 minutes each, allowing Frittenwerk to save resources and make decisions more quickly.
„You have to be clearly committed to a Design2Market project at the start of the process and be present at the short but focussed meetings with the right people. The reward is an optimal packaging solution that fulfils all requirements. At the same time, the efficient process saves an enormous amount of time. Ultimately, it was precisely this strong commitment that drove the success of the project: a short timeframe, a high level of commitment, all the important people at the table at the right time - this is how projects reach their goal quickly and successfully.“
Mike Manfred Huth-Sammet, Lead Supply Chain Manager at Frittenwerk
With the customised packaging, Smurfit Westrock has developed a practical and functional solution together with Frittenwerk that makes everyday delivery more efficient and ensures the quality of the food delivered. The Design2Market principle proves how quickly and purposefully customised packaging solutions can be created - an approach that also offers great potential for future projects.
