Automation systems are becoming increasingly intelligent and powerful, but also more complex. This leads to a higher probability of errors when installing and connecting machine components. At the same time, the shortage of skilled labour is making it increasingly difficult to find experts trained in electrical engineering. Murrelektronik has developed an intelligent digital solution that solves all these challenges in one go: uKonn-X.

Over the past three years, Murrelektronik has developed the first version of uKonn-X in its newly founded Global Business Unit „Digital Solutions“ and is currently working on the market launch with pilot customers.

uKonn-X stands for „you connect anything“ - and this name says it all: like a pilot, the digital system guides the user step by step and easily understandably through even complex installations or commissioning.

Such a digital pilot would of course not only be a good idea for machine installation and commissioning, but also for the maintenance of the system and its components. That's why Murrelektronik is working on further solutions - building on the existing uKonn-X - to make these activities easier, minimise the likelihood of errors and sustainably improve the quality of the results.

Special AI algorithm

Working with uKonn-X is extremely simple: the user reads the respective component using the printed, machine-readable code on a handheld scanner or mobile phone - and the system links this information with the machine or system's electrical and mechanical data.

uKonn-X uses the available machine data and information to link the electrical circuit diagram with a virtual 2D or 3D model - and guides the user safely through it.

To make this possible, Murrelektronik has developed and trained a special AI algorithm. It automatically compares the electrical data of the 2D model with the mechanical design data of the 3D model and links these data together.

Digitally supported processes ensure security

uKonn-X shows the user which components need to be connected in the next step based on the circuit diagram and the 2D or 3D model of the machine. The system makes it easy to map order-specific installation sequences. At the same time, illuminated status LEDs on the corresponding fieldbus modules in the machine indicate the correct slot.

The result: What was previously the exclusive domain of electrotechnically qualified persons and yet often proved to be error-prone in practice is now child's play and much quicker.

Just like the navigation system in a car or smartphone, uKonn-X provides clearly understandable visual instructions for each individual installation step - and the system warns the user immediately if they have not carried out a step correctly, for example if they have accidentally selected the wrong installation location or slot.

As soon as a step has been successfully completed, the user confirms this in the system - and uKonn-X automatically writes complete technical documentation for the actual installation in the background.

The actual installed machine with all its components is fully digitally documented and therefore available at any time, according to the Oppenweiler company.
