The new DIN SPEC 5010 standard has been agreed by five trade associations from the paper, cardboard, cartonboard and food science sectors. It describes a standardised measurement method for evaluating the barrier performance of paper, cardboard and paperboard produced with recycled paper content and equipped with an integrated barrier.
Applicable is the Measuring method to unprocessed materials in the form of Sheet and roll goods. The manufacturers of the products know their processing conditions and pass on the relevant information to their customers, for example on creasing requirements and possible packaging designs. With the help of the DIN SPEC 5100 customers can then estimate the migration from the finished packaging in relation to the specific application and include it in the risk assessment.
In the development of the new, standardised measurement method The Association of German Paper Mills, the Folding Carton Industry Association (FFI), the Association of the Corrugated Board Industry (VDW), the Association of Packaging and Corrugated Board Papers (VPWP) and the German Federation for Food Law and Food Science (BLL) were involved in the project. Other partners from industry, research and testing institutions were also involved in the project.
In connection with Food packaging are Mineral oil hydrocarbons came to the fore after it was discovered in 2009 that these can also occur in packaging made from recycled cardboard or paper and can be transferred to food. The main sources of hydrocarbons in waste paper were identified as Printing inks containing mineral oil which are mainly used in newspaper printing.
