For its own brands Balea, babylove and alverde Naturkosmetik, dm is using new tubes that contain less plastic and more recycled material. Through these measures, the company is saving resources and reducing CO2-emissions.

The drugstore chain dm has announced a change in the packaging of its own brands Balea, babylove and alverde Naturkosmetik. The use of new tubes made from recycled material and weigh less the company saves a considerable amount of resources and reduces CO2-emissions.

A central innovation is the 40 mm diameter tubes with a reduced cap design, which weighs 29 per cent less on average. According to dm, this reduction leads to lower CO2-impact in both production and transport. The material-reduced closures for Balea Professional shampoos and conditioners enable a saving of around 23 per cent in closure material, which equates to a total of approx. 16 tonnes of plastic per year equivalent. In addition, the conversion of the tubes for the Balea Professional range will replace around 86 tonnes of plastic with recycled material every year.

The tubes of alverde natural cosmetics shaving gel organic aloe vera & organic camomile and after shave care have also been optimised and now come with 33 per cent less plastic which corresponds to a saving of 1.2 tonnes of plastic per year. The company plans to extend these changes to other products. For the entire babylove tube range, the new weight-reduced tube closure leads to a weight reduction of up to 5.69 grams per product, which corresponds to around 30 per cent and 4.2 tonnes of plastic per year.

In the search for optimal packaging solutions, dm relies on the following, especially for its own brands sustainable innovations, material savings and the use of recycled materials. Currently, over 40 per cent of the packaging for dm brand products is already made from recycled plastic. The company is aiming to increase this proportion to 50 per cent by 2025 and is focusing on the use of mono-material packaging in the further development of its branded products in order to improve recyclability.

One example of this is the tube of shaving gel, which is made from at least 70 per cent recycled material, while the tube of aftershave is made from at least 61 per cent recycled plastic. Thanks to the Increased use of recycled plastic Another 86 tonnes of new plastic are to be avoided. With these measures, dm is pursuing the goal of further promoting sustainable packaging solutions and making a contribution to reducing the environmental impact.
