DS Smith accelerates its plans to reduce carbon emissions: the Supplier of sustainable packaging directed is adapting its global business activities to a 1.5°C scenario, as set out in the Paris Climate Agreement.
To achieve this goal, DS Smith aims to accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions from its own production facilities and those of its partners and suppliers by committing to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 46 per cent in absolute terms by 2030 compared to 2019. „Today's announcement emphasises our ambition to reduce our carbon emissions as part of our Long-term focus on sustainability to reduce our carbon footprint. This commitment not only ensures that our company leads by example in reducing our carbon footprint, but also ensures that we ask our suppliers and partners to do the same,“ explains Miles Roberts, Group Chief Executive at DS Smith.
DS Smith focusses on future technologies
To fulfil this commitment, DS Smith intends to invest in future technologies such as biomethane boiler technology. The company will also utilise renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power as well as power purchase agreements to replace conventional electricity. The implementation of these commitments will be supported by a Net Zero transition plan supported. This sets out the key strategic actions and milestones that will define DS Smith's transition to net zero emissions. The plan will be published in summer 2022 and is aligned with the Group's growth strategy. The roadmap to 1.5°C was presented at the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for review.
