DS Smith impresses at WorldStar Global Packaging Awards

Five products from DS Smith shone at the WorldStar Global Packaging Awards 2022. The winners are international, as the innovative solutions come not only from Germany and Switzerland, but also from Denmark, Finland and Hungary.

Bubeck e-commerce packaging becomes a dog basket: winner in the Pet Food category

Bübchen Skincare sustainability display: winner in the Health and Personal Care category

Bübchen will save 116 tonnes of plastic in 2021 alone with its new bottle made from 100% recycled plastic. The environmentally friendly packaging and its mildly nourishing contents will be promoted in stores with an equally sustainable, recyclable sales display from DS Smith. To maximise attention at the POS, the display was designed as an XXL version of the iconic Bübchen bottle. The Display body made of natural brown corrugated cardboard consists of 100 per cent recycled material. The monomaterial solution made of corrugated cardboard can be fully recycled and thus remains a valuable raw material.

The display design has the necessary stability to support the products without the need for plastic. Assembly and packaging are extremely simple thanks to the pre-glued body: in retail, just remove the cover and sales can begin. The brand-consistent sales display has already been recognised by the jury of the German Packaging Award in the product presentation category.

Palpa Twist Recycling Container: Winner in the Other category

Based on customer needs, DS Smith in Finland has developed a new recycling container. The empty containers are sent to retailers who collect empty cans and PET bottles in a special filling machine that collects the cans and bottles for recycling. When transported flat, the container fits on a Euro pallet. This new innovative container is Ready for use in just 30 seconds thanks to the sealed base flaps and the manually locked upper structure. This brings efficiency to shops and supermarkets and saves time and money. A complex requirement was met with a simple solution - this already convinced the jury of the ScanStar Award.

Sustainable packaging solution for semiconductors: Winner in the Electronics category

DS Smith Hungary developed a 100 per cent recyclable, size and material-optimised packaging solutionwhich harmonises with a wide range of semiconductor products from Infineon Technologies. The challenge was to standardise the packaging for approximately 600 product types, to replace the inefficient manual packaging process and to increase sustainability while avoiding hazardous plastic and waste.

The innovative Design fits into automated lines, fully protects products from mechanical and electrical discharge and is still user-friendly. The solution reduces weight (by 96 tonnes per year), which helps to minimise CO2-emissions, and offers optimised logistics (approx. 25 percent fewer pallets/year), resulting in annual material cost savings of 56 percent.
