According to a representative survey commissioned by the German Packaging Institute (dvi), the sustainability of packaging can be a decisive factor in the purchase of a product. Almost 70 % of German citizens state that they have already decided not to buy a product at least once because the packaging was not sustainable enough. Almost one in five do this regularly.
Results in detail
19.3 % of German citizens regularly refrain from buying products that they feel are not packaged sustainably enough. 50.2 % have already done this at least once. 30.5 % state that the sustainability of the packaging does not play a role in their purchasing decision.
„The current dvi survey on the occasion of the 5th nationwide Packaging Day shows that packaging not only plays a central role in protecting products, but is also important for the Purchase decision of great importance to consumers. We are pleased as Network of the packaging industry about the great awareness and responsible behaviour of the population. Our industry has also recognised the signs of the times. It is on the right track with numerous innovative solutions. And in doing so, it is meeting the wishes and demands of the population,“ says Kim Cheng, Managing Director of the German Packaging Institute.
5th Packaging Day - exhibition of sustainable packaging
On the online presence of the Packaging Day, the dvi shows a selection of sustainable packaging that has recently appeared on the market.
„Something is moving. Not only in the discussion surrounding the sustainability of packaging, but also in the results. The industry is pursuing a Series of approaches, to design and produce sustainable packaging. This includes the use of recycled materials, the reduction of packaging volume and material usage, the replacement of plastic with other packaging materials, strict „Design for Recycling“ to the complete recyclability of used packaging and the development of new packaging materials from renewable raw materials, for example for composting,“ explains Kim Cheng.
