Europe-wide launch of the first global environmental assessment system for cosmetics: L'Oréal Paris, Neutrogena, Nivea Q10 and Eucerin introduce the EcoBeautyScore, a scientifically based environmental assessment system for cosmetic products.

EcoBeautyScore, the first global environmental rating system for cosmetics and personal care products, has now been officially launched in Europe. The initiative is organised by the non-profit EcoBeautyScore Association, which developed the system together with over 70 companies and industry associations. Among the first brands to publish results are L'Oréal Paris, Neutrogena, Nivea Q10 and Eucerin.

Scientifically sound assessment in 16 environmental categories

The system is based on the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology of the EU and assesses products over their entire life cycle - from raw material extraction to disposal. The environmental impact is recorded in 16 categories such as CO₂ emissions, water consumption and resource depletion and presented on a scale from A (best rating) to E.

According to an international study with over 9,000 participants, the new label creates trust: Two thirds of those surveyed want to include the EcoBeautyScore in their purchasing decisions in future. The system is thus responding to a growing Need for guidance on sustainability promises in the cosmetics sector - especially in view of the fact that around half of European consumers have so far been sceptical about such claims.

Focus on access for brands of all sizes and transparency

According to the EcoBeautyScore Association, the evaluation process is regularly independently audited and certified. Brands of all sizes can test the platform free of charge and receive onboarding support. At launch, the system comprises four product categories: Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and facial care products. A global expansion is planned.

„EcoBeautyScore is the transparency tool that the beauty industry has been missing until now. For the first time, brands can communicate their environmental impact in a scientifically sound, consistent and understandable way. Through an easy-to-use scoring platform, companies gain access to comprehensive data on the environmental hotspots of their products, which is now accessible to brands of all sizes, regardless of their sustainability experience.“

Jean-Baptiste Massignon, Managing Director of the EcoBeautyScore Association

Laurent Gilbert, Scientific Director of the initiative, also emphasises: „With EcoBeautyScore, we have transformed the complexity of environmental assessment into an accessible platform.“
