The „Management Guide Eco Design of Plastic Packaging“ has now been presented for the first time in Berlin. Designed as a practice-orientated tool, the guide helps companies to find the right eco design strategy and integrate it into packaging development.
Developed by the „Round Table Eco Design of Plastic Packaging“ with participants along the entire value chain, the guide is set to become the future standard repertoire for packaging development. The tool for the 360-degree check of packaging solutions is now available free of charge.
„The Eco Design of Plastic Packaging Guide is an effective and holistic tool that is urgently awaited by its users“

Strategically anchoring eco design in the core management guidelines
While packaging designers can optimise their packaging solutions in a targeted manner using checklists, instructions or illustrative examples, a core guideline has been developed for management, which is already available for sustainable packaging design. top decision-making levels prepares the ground. Eco design can be considered right from the start.
More than just design for recycling
Plastic packaging, which protects goods during transport, in shops and at the end consumer, plays a central role when it comes to conserving valuable resources and protecting the climate. In recent years, however, plastic packaging has come under increasing pressure due to inadequate waste management in various regions of the world.
Large quantities of plastic remain unused in landfill sites or even end up in the so-called „Littering“ into the environment. Manufacturers and users are increasingly demanding „design for recycling“ in order to minimise plastic waste. permanently in the recycling loop to hold.
However, the design of plastic packaging encompasses many more aspects, and so the requirements for recycling-friendly design must be harmonised and balanced with other important environmental aspects and core functions of the packaging.
„While a number of guidelines and tools have already been developed in recent years for „design for recycling“, this guide focuses on conveying a comprehensive understanding of eco design. At the same time, the existing tools are bundled together for the first time. With the underlying approaches, we can further improve the ecological profile of plastic packaging,“ says IK Managing Director Dr Isabell Schmidt.
