The basis for the development was the „Natural Brown Board“, which was introduced in 2017 and consists of unbleached fibres.

Packaging specialist Elopak has presented a natural white gable top board that saves up to 14 per cent CO₂ compared to the previous standard white board. The „Natural White Board“ was developed together with Stora Enso - as a new, sustainable offering for fresh food products.

Elopak is expanding its portfolio of environmentally friendly packaging solutions with the „Natural White Board“. The new type of cartonboard does away with the usual chalk coating, but offers the same protective function and processing quality as the previous white Pure-Pak cartonboard. As a result, CO₂ emissions can be reduced by up to 14 per cent, according to the company.

The basis for the development was the „Natural Brown Board“, which was introduced in 2017 and consists of unbleached fibres. The new natural white board only uses bleached fibres in the top layer. This ensures a clean, light-coloured finish with a reduced environmental impact.

Successful market launch with Norwegian organic pioneer

The Natural White Board was first used by the Norwegian organic dairy Rørosmeieriet, which had already introduced its predecessor, the Natural Brown Board. According to the company, the new board can be used on existing Elopak filling lines without any problems. The company is pleased to be able to offer customers additional sustainability benefits.

Michael Olsson from Stora Enso emphasised that the aim of the innovation was to offer brand owners who prefer a white surface a CO₂-optimised alternative.

Focus on climate targets

According to Elopak, the new product also sets an example for consistent climate protection. The company wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Science Based Targets initiative and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. With over 2,600 employees and more than 14 billion cartons sold annually, Elopak is active in over 70 markets worldwide.
