Defying the price war with innovative quality products: That is the motto of Zünd Systemtechnik AG. The developer of cutting machines also has customers in the packaging industry. The latest development, the BHS150 cutting table, can process stacked materials up to 1.50 metres high. This makes it ideal for the high output of a digital printing machine.

In the Packaging technologybut also in trade fair and furniture construction and in advertising technology, sheets of corrugated cardboard, foam, solid cardboard, honeycomb structure and PVC have to be cut precisely all the time. This task is performed by Cutter systems done. The Swiss family business Zünd Systemtechnik AG has developed since its beginnings in 1984 into what it considers to be a leading manufacturer of modular and digital cutting systems. More than 300 employees work at the headquarters in Altstätten and in various sales and service centres.

Packaging industry increasingly requests automation

"We are seeing our customers' increasing Automation by robots," says Managing Director Oliver Zünd, describing one of the challenges facing his company. The packaging industry and online retail in particular are demanding ever more flexible automated solutions: "We are seeing consolidation in the graphics and packaging industries in particular." In order to respond appropriately to this demand, the Swiss company took the lead in its latest development, the cutting table BHS150 with an automatic feed and removal system, Schmalz is an experienced expert for the design of the vacuum system.

The abbreviation for the new product stands for a "board handling system" that can process a stack height of 1.50 metres and therefore enables longer operating times. This makes it particularly interesting for customers who need to process large runs economically and efficiently. "In addition to the cutting table, the system consists of an automatic feeder with Vacuum gripper spider and an automatic removal station," explains Roman Hasler, Product Manager at Zünd Systemtechnik. It was designed according to the requirements of a customer. Above all, it had to be able to cope with the high output of a digital printing machine. It should also be possible to process a job unmanned overnight.

Suction spider takes sheets from the stack

The new system takes various materials from the stack and places individual sheets on the cutting machine. The Suction spider travels over the pallet, picks up the workpiece and aligns it. On the way to the cutting table, a scanner reads a QR code on the plate. The code contains the order ID. The workpiece is then placed on the cutting table.

The decisive factor for reliable processes with the BHS150 is the Vacuum technology. Zünd turned to Stephan Wilms, systems consultant at the Schmalz GmbH. Together with him and with the support of the company Aerne Engineeringwhich supplied the entire automation, they realised the separation during destacking - a new function at Zünd. They also chose a Suction padwhich can safely pick up both rigid and flexible materials. "One suction cup for all materials is advantageous for the customer. It is a series product and the simplicity of the solution is a convincing argument for our customers," says Oliver Zünd. "We have even tested films, which also works," adds Roman Hasler.

Vacuum generator works with silencer

To achieve the required short Cycle times Schmalz recommended the vacuum generator "ecoPump SEP" with silencer. The vacuum is generated directly at the suction cup. The flexible, adaptable sealing lip of the SPB2 bellows suction cup adapts perfectly to different surfaces and seals well. In addition, round Flat suction pads which, thanks to their flat shape and small volume, can grip the workpiece particularly quickly and accurately.

"So far, everyone is satisfied with the solution," reports Oliver Zünd on the initial experiences of customers who are already running test systems with the BHS150. For the Zünd Managing Director, the "experiment" of using the BHS150 in a new development is a great success. Co-operation partner on board was a success.
