Together with partner companies, Engel is closing the material loop for sophisticated visible ABS components at K 2022. With the help of Roctool induction technology and digital solutions, housing parts with a very high-quality visible surface are produced from post-consumer recyclate.
In order to advance the circular economy, plastic waste in a much broader range of applications. Visible components with very high-quality surfaces have posed a particularly great challenge to date. In order to obtain them directly in injection moulding without post-processing, a high proportion of virgin material is usually required, if recyclate can be added at all.
At K 2022, Engel and the technology company Roctool (Le Bourget du Lac, France) will be demonstrating that there is now another way. Electronic boxes with a high-gloss surface are produced on an e-mac 465/160 injection moulding machine. They are made from rABS, which comes from post-consumer collections. Innovative patterns are laser-engraved into the cavity on the top of the boxes, while the sides are equipped with devices for mounting fans and connections. The ultra-thin design - the wall thickness is 1.2 mm - also saves material. Conventional injection moulding would require more wall thickness.
Digital assistants compensate for fluctuations
The key to the high surface quality of the recycled component is in the interaction of future-oriented machine and tool technologies. The all-electric Engel e mac injection moulding machine works with mould temperature control based on induction technology from Roctoolwhich enables outstanding moulding precision and the highest surface quality. The new energy-efficient, compact and air-cooled Roctool generators will be used at the K.
A further contribution to the high quality of recyclate processing is made by the intelligent assistance systems from Engel's inject 4.0 programmewith which the e-mac machine is equipped. These include iQ weight control, which recognises fluctuations in the raw material and automatically adjusts the injection profile, switchover point and holding pressure to the current conditions in the same cycle. As recycled materials are generally subject to greater batch fluctuations than virgin material, iQ weight control achieves a significant advantage in this application. This has a particularly great effect on consistently high product quality. At the same time, iQ melt control improves the homogeneity of the plastic melt by automatically setting the plasticising time to the optimum value for the application.
For manufacturers of household appliances, white goods, consumer electronics and telecommunications, the application presented at K demonstrates the great potential for the circular economy. The proportion of new goods can be significantly reduced, in the best case to zero. Many manufacturers are already taking back old appliances in order to recycle them and return them to production. With the combination of Roctool induction technology and digital assistance from Engel, it is now possible to The company can also produce sophisticated housing parts with a very thin, complex geometry economically and sustainably from post-consumer recyclate.
Partnerships are the key to success
Other system partners involved in the project's success include Moldetipo (Marinha Grande, Portugal), who built the mould, Lavergne (Montréal, Canada), who provided the recyclate, INCOE (Rödermark, Germany) for the hot runners and Standex Engraving Mold-Tech (Treviso, Italy) for the mould engraving.
Close cooperation along the value chain is essential for the development of a circular economy. Engel is therefore strongly committed to networking companies on cross-company, horizontal platforms. Among other things in the R-Cycle initiativewhose aim is to introduce digital passports for plastic products. All recycling-relevant information is automatically recorded during product manufactureThis enables waste sorting plants, for example, to identify recyclable plastics more precisely and provide unmixed fractions for recycling. In this way, the downcycling that has prevailed to date is stopped and the processed plastics are recycled to the same or even a higher value.
