VDW survey: environmentally friendly packaging is important in online retail

A survey commissioned by the German Association of the Corrugated Board Industry (VDW) revealed that 76 per cent of regular e-commerce customers in Germany consider environmentally friendly packaging to be important or even very important.

A survey commissioned by the German Association of the Corrugated Board Industry (VDW) revealed that 76 per cent of regular e-commerce customers in Germany consider environmentally friendly packaging to be important or even very important.

According to the online survey conducted by Kantar Public on behalf of the German Association of the Corrugated Board Industry (VDW), online shoppers also have the same clear ideas of the criteria that make up environmentally friendly packaging.

For 75 per cent of the e-commerce customers surveyed, the Complete recyclability of the material are among the properties that characterise environmentally friendly packaging. This criterion is therefore in first place - closely followed by the Avoiding plastic, which 72 per cent of survey participants named.

Two requirements share third place

Third place is shared by two requirements: 67 per cent of respondents consider packaging to be environmentally friendly if it is are not larger than the goods require. An equally high proportion of online shoppers are of the opinion that environmentally friendly Packaging made from recycled material should exist. 64 per cent of respondents also mentioned a Base made from renewable raw materials as a criterion.

„The survey results make it clear that consumers who regularly shop online have a whole range of expectations when it comes to environmentally friendly packaging. Online retailers who opt for corrugated cardboard shipping packaging are making a good choice and meeting their customers“ wishes, as the material is fully recyclable, contributes to plastic avoidance, is based on renewable raw materials and consists of 80 per cent recycled material." Consumers are aware of environmentally friendly packaging

According to the survey, many people are already aware that corrugated cardboard packaging is recyclable and environmentally friendly: 57 per cent of participants confirmed this statement.

„When asked about the information status, 80 per cent of e-commerce customers also knew that used corrugated board should be folded flat and disposed of in waste paper,“ adds the VDW Executive Director. This shows that corrugated board is perceived as a circular product. At the same time, there is interest in even more information. For example, 49 per cent of respondents would like more detailed information on the material and its environmental friendlinesst directly on the packaging.

In this respect, the industry is also taking the survey results as an incentive to further strengthen its communication on the sustainability of corrugated board. „A sustainable material cycle relies heavily on the support of everyone involved,“ emphasises Wolfrum.
