EU aerosol production increases again in 2024

The largest producers are Germany, France and Italy.

The European aerosol industry is reporting a return to growth for 2024: according to the latest industry overview from the European Aerosol Federation (FEA), over 3.4 billion cans were produced in the EU. The largest producers are Germany, France and Italy; together with the Netherlands and Spain, they account for more than 2.9 billion units.

After three subdued years, the development curve is pointing upwards again: in 2024, EU production will total 3.460 billion units (previous year: 3.343 billion). At the same time, the FEA confirms the dominant role of the three largest manufacturing countries, which together account for over 60 per cent of the EU total.

Segments: personal care ahead, household stable

In terms of segments, personal care leads with a 47.8 per cent market share, followed by household with 17.3 per cent; „Others“ (including paints/varnishes, automotive, food, pharmaceuticals/vets) account for 34.9 per cent. In the detailed overview, deodorants/antiperspirants stand out with around 824 million units; in household sprays, air fresheners are the largest subgroup with 214 million cans. Other relevant volumes are attributable to paints/varnishes (~303 million), automotive (219 million), food (267 million), industrial & technical (239 million), pharmaceuticals/vets (77 million), care products (99 million) and cleaners (43 million).

Material mix and global categorisation

Aerosol dispensers in the EU are predominantly made of steel and aluminium; glass and plastic only play a minor role. In a global comparison, the EU (data basis 2023) remains one of the largest production locations with around 3.46 billion units, alongside the USA and China.
