European Carton Excellence Award 2025: submissions now possible

The European Carton Excellence Award 2025 starts the application phase. Companies in the cartonboard packaging industry can submit their innovative designs until 16 May 2025. The award ceremony will take place on 18 September 2025 in Istanbul.

The European Carton Excellence Award (ECEA), one of the most prestigious competitions in the carton packaging industry in Europe, is now accepting submissions for the year 2025. Organised by Pro Carton and the European Carton Makers Association (ECMA), the competition provides a platform for companies from the entire value chain to showcase their most innovative fibre-based packaging solutions. The award is aimed at brands, converters, manufacturers and designers from all over Europe and has been recognising particularly sustainable and creative packaging solutions for 28 years.

New categories for a broader focus

The competition categories have been revised for the 2025 edition to take the requirements of brand owners even more into account. The growing importance of sustainable packaging is also reflected in the inclusion of both virgin fibre and recycled fibre materials.

The awards are presented in the following seven main categories:

Display

  • Beverages

  • Frozen & Chilled Food

  • Ambient Food

  • Confectionery

  • Pharma/Health Care

  • Cosmetics & Beauty

  • General Packaging

In addition, participants can optionally register their entries for the Sustainability Award and the Innovation Award. All finalists also have the chance to win the prestigious „Carton of the Year Award“ and the Public Award.

Evaluation by a jury of experts

The winners are selected by a jury of experts from the packaging industry. The submitted designs are assessed on the basis of strict criteria, including graphic and structural design, production methods, cost efficiency, ecology, innovation, sustainability and consumer friendliness. Last year's jury included representatives from FMCG manufacturer Unilever and retailer Carrefour.

Call for participation

Winfried Mühling, Head of Marketing & Communication at Pro Carton, emphasises: „The revised structure of the ECEA 2025 highlights the central role of cartonboard as a sustainable packaging solution. The new categories emphasise the importance of brand presence and sustainable packaging concepts. The competition not only recognises creative and functional packaging, but also honours the innovative strength and craftsmanship of the industry.“

Interested companies can submit their entries until 16 May 2025 via the Pro Carton website. The winners will be announced on 18 September 2025 at the ECMA Congress in Istanbul.
