It's been a while since the award ceremony. At Pro Carton, the European Association of the Cartonboard and Folding Carton Industry, the joy extends into the new year. Today, it is once again presenting the German winners of the European Carton Excellence Awards 2020. We are happy to share the joy and show you this award-winning packaging.

For the Liqui Moly Klima ReFresh Design made of cardboard from BillerudKorsnäs received the Edelmann Group one „Platinum“ award. The air freshener packaging has a perforated top with pictograms that are instructions for opening. The innovative design allows the box to be pushed down so that the side walls form small feet or wings. This allows the air freshener to be placed in the footwell of a car without it falling over.

And yet another Edelmann collaboration, this time with Stora Enso, was honoured. Here the company won with its ISANA Cosmetics-Contribution in the category „General packaging - virgin fibre“.

Well wound: For the jury, the Bauerfeind sock cover from Karl Knauer an „extraordinary wraparound packaging that is a true design masterpiece“. The packaging made from Sappi carton is skilfully designed to maximise consumer appeal at the point of sale while minimising material consumption. The complex design is also equipped with integrated anti-theft protection. Nevertheless, the packaging is easy to open and the contents are directly accessible.

Another „Gold“ award went to Siemer packaging for its face mask aid made from Smurfit Kappa Hoya cardboard. The clever packaging enables contact-free donning and doffing as well as temporary storage and sterilisation of high-quality face masks used in hospitals. The innovative design supports the correct positioning of different types of masks as it has dust flaps with a guide slot for rubber headbands.

Speaking of face masks: they have become massively more important in 2020 for good reason. The other awards for cartonboard processors from Germany are not „pure“ packaging. However, they demonstrate how quickly the industry has responded to new requirements during the coronavirus pandemic.

The disposable cardboard face mask was developed to fulfil the requirements and regulations for wearing a face mask during the coronavirus pandemic. The innovative Monomaterial design contains a white filter paper insert. It reduces the risk of virus transmission and can be recycled after use. The Weig mask is biodegradable.

Cardboard processor PAWI Packaging received a „Gold“ award for his Fibre Shield. The face mask is made of Stora Enso cardboard and has a viewing window made of PET film. The face shield can be adjusted using the universal hole pattern on the headband. After use, it can be disposed of in the normal waste sorting system. This is the second time in a row and the fifth time in the last six years that the company has won an award.

„The European Carton Excellence Awards 2020 were another great success for cartonboard converters from Germany. We were very pleased that the global pandemic not only had no negative impact on the quality of the entries, but even served as encouragement and inspiration for new PPE designs to combat virus transmission. The cardboard converters from Germany impressively demonstrated their expertise and won in several categories. They deservedly received a lot of compliments from the jury for their unique packaging, which shows how sustainable and versatile cartonboard is as a packaging material.“ Tony Hitchin, General Manager at Pro Carton
