Countries with a particularly high proportion of wines with aluminium closures are Germany, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA.

In the year of the pandemic, the global share of aluminium closures for wine increased by 2 percentage points from 31 % in 2019 to 33 %, (Europe: 30 to 32%) across all closure types for wine in both retail and foodservice. In the retail sector, consumption of wine with aluminium screw caps remained stable during the pandemic, with the share increasing slightly from 35 % to 36 %.

Wine sales from supermarkets and other retail outlets increased as out-of-home consumption opportunities were restricted by the closure of bars and restaurants and the cancellation of events where hospitality and catering are important.

Alongside Italy, the United Kingdom and Russia, Germany is one of the few European countries with higher wine consumption in 2020.
