The advantages of packaging made of paper, cardboard or paperboard, which were described in Part 2 of the series focussing on folding cartons made of cardboard, also apply in terms of processing and finishing properties to the „big brothers“, the packaging and displays made of solid and corrugated cardboard, which originally „only“ served to protect the contents.
In the meantime, the „brown boxes“ have become multifunctional presentation packaging, sales displays as advertising media and packaging for the mail order business, which are indispensable at the point of sale and for online business. On an equal footing with all other types of packaging, they win prizes in numerous competitions. Some companies have established themselves nationally and internationally in this field and score points both within the industry, such as in the Corrugated Board Innovation Prize, which is awarded by the Association of the Corrugated Board Industry in the storage/transport and sales promotion categories, and in global packaging competitions.
STI - manufacturer with expertise
The „tokibox“ carrier pack from STI, then still trading as Gustav Stabernack GmbH, was honoured at the 1st German Packaging Competition in 1963. Today the STI Group has demonstrated its construction and design expertise in numerous national and international competitions. Since the first competition in 2011, the Group has been recognised for outstanding PoS activities at more than 250 awards look back, of which more than 30 POPAI D-A-CH Awards.

Even with the latest SilverPack Award for „polite packaging“ was awarded to STI. The starting points for this are simpler opening mechanisms or easy removal (courteous to the consumer), resealability and good product protection (courteous to the product), but also a low use of raw materials (courteous to the environment). The packaging honoured in 2017 is a Open-close packaging.
Concept for granulated products
The folding carton with a holistically thought-out concept was developed for granulated products such as sugar, animal feed, detergents or road salt. It is characterised by a perforation with an easy-to-grip overhang. Easy to open, the content is Can be dosed without the user coming into contact with the product, and it is resealable.
„For me, the SilverPack Award clearly emphasises the importance of packaging in everyday life: it doesn't just have to look good on the shelf, it also has to offer the user a Added value and optimally protect the product,“ says Andrea Wildies, Managing Director of Sales and Marketing at the STI Group.
