Fernholz Verpackungen has received authorisation from the European Union to process recycled PET for direct food contact.
According to the company, this makes it one of the few companies in Germany that can offer a fully EU-approved recycling process.
„A significant step for sustainable packaging solutions“
The production of packaging made from recycled plastics requires the highest quality and safety standards. A key aspect of sustainability is the use of so-called „hot washed flakes“ - plastic flakes that undergo a multi-stage cleaning process to remove impurities such as adhesive residues and beverage residues. However, this process alone is not sufficient for the use of the flakes in the production of films and packaging with food contact. Decontamination using special heating processes is also required.
Innovation and future prospects
The EU authorisation that has now been granted represents a decisive step in Fernholz Verpackungen's sustainability strategy. The company had already submitted the application to the EU in 2022. According to its own estimates, it is now one of around 250 companies in Europe and around 25 companies in Germany to have received this authorisation. With the associated RAN number „DEA-5IR-1AA“, Fernholz Verpackungen now has an officially recognised recycling process for PET that is recognised as „Suitable Technology“.“
This EU authorisation is a milestone for our company and confirms our sustainable innovation course. We focus on resource-conserving production and want to actively contribute to the further development of the circular economy in the packaging industry.“
