In the digitalisation category, a Gold Award went to CIRCULAR ERP, a platform from Sykell for the Management of reusable and circular goods. The cloud-based software model was specially developed for the management of deposit and returnable systems and can map a variety of different primary and secondary packaging such as bottles, moulded trays or other containers. The software also integrates various third-party providers such as logistics partners and cleaning companies, enabling efficient operations throughout the entire supply chain. This makes it much easier for companies to enter the circular economy.

In the Functionality & Convenience category, gold went to Magic-B-locK, an innovative Packaging with closure and opening by means of legitimisation card. The exclusive packaging was developed to protect children and young people from opening and consuming the packaged goods. In this specific case, e-cigarettes and liquids with nicotine. The packaging can be Only open with a separate legitimisation card, which must be held on the front of the box. An audible technical „click“ signals that the box has been opened. Especially in view of the growing market for nicotine-containing products and the ongoing legalisation of cannabis, the intelligent function of the packaging convinced the jury.

Gold for LEEB GmbH & Co. KG.

PureWrap PP - THE unmixed and recyclable soft cheese wrapper - Leeb GmbH & Co. KG. Dr Julia Eberhardt (Image: Leeb GmbH & Co. KG, Dr Julia Eberhardt)

Leeb's PureWrap PP was awarded gold in the sustainability category. The Single-variety and recyclable soft cheese curlers shines with two 100 per cent scores: for the material used and for recyclability. The jury praised the switch from multi-material primary packaging to a pure PP wrapper. The mono-material consists of an outer layer and a specially woven PP. This fleece-like layer allows the cheese to continue maturing naturally by forming an air cushion. The customer does not notice any difference when eating the cheese. The challenge for the Product quality and the monomaterial for the circular economy is outstanding and was particularly emphasised by the jury.

Gold for Zotefoams plc

ReZorce Circular Packaging - Zotefoams plc (Image: Zotefoams plc)

Another gold in the sustainability category went to ReZorce Circular Packaging from Zotefoams. The Sustainable alternative for beverage cartons consists of 100 per cent HDPE, whereby 30 to 70 per cent mechanically recycled HDPE can be used. A Patented technology enables the application of a layer with a barrier function, during extrusion. Another gold argument for the jury: the HDPE packaging demonstrably reduces environmental impacts such as water consumption and energy use by around 50 per cent compared to conventional composite beverage cartons.

Gold for Multivac Sepp Haggenmüller SE & Co. KG

Multivac Cooling Packing - Multivac (Picture: Multivac)

The Multivac Cooling@Packing System won a Gold Award in the Packaging Machines category. The Machine uses vacuum to cool baked goods during packaging. The cooling process is integrated into a thermoforming, filling and sealing machine. The required reduction in temperature from 95°C to around 30°C is achieved by vacuum chambers arranged one behind the other in the packaging machine. The Immediate packaging after baking optimises freshness and shelf life of the products. As the usual separate cooling process is no longer required, energy, time and space can be saved. The inline solution also increases process reliability and reduces costs compared to conventional vacuum coolers. Many arguments in favour of gold in the eyes of the jury.
