The members of Flexible Packaging Europe (FPE) unanimously adopted a sustainability vision at their first virtual conference. In doing so, they want to reaffirm their commitment to representing a common position on the circular economy.
The European flexible packaging industry continues to tackle the challenges of sustainable development. Flexible packaging is mainly made of plastics, which are often seen as problematic. It is therefore necessary to emphasise and convince stakeholders that flexible packaging already plays a key role in sustainability issues in Europe.
Sustainability vision forms the common basis
The interest group also wants to show how this role can be further developed and improved in the future. The market leaders and many small and medium-sized specialised processors are involved in the joint initiative. The Sustainability vision is aimed at both the industry itself to provide orientation, as well as to external interest groups. These include customers, retailers, legislators and NGOs.
The Sustainability vision explains the environmental and social benefits of flexible packaging and the industry's efforts to minimise any problems that arise. It also shows how the flexible packaging industry is voluntarily taking a responsible position on this issue. It summarises the industry's approach and activities in this regard and describes how they actively contribute to achieving the goals set out in the vision works.

FPE is supported by more than 80 small and medium-sized companies as well as large European manufacturers of flexible packaging made from a wide range of materials. The member companies account for more than 85 per cent of European sales of flexible packaging. Six national flexible packaging associations are also members of the FPE. This ensures harmonised association work in national and European activities and in the representation of interests[/infotext].„I am delighted with the bold FPE initiative to adopt this sustainability vision. The industry has always been aware that it a positive role in mitigating climate change must play. These decisions clearly demonstrate the proactive role it is taking. I am pleased that the members have found common ground on this very important issue and that European industry is working together on it.“ Guido Aufdemkamp, Executive Director of FPE
