The packaging sector must become more sustainable. One possibility: the increased use of bio-based polymers, either as a packaging material or as an adhesive and coating. At Fachpack, the Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e. V. (FNR) will be presenting new approaches to sustainable, bio-based packaging.

At this year's trade fair stand, the FNR will be focussing on research into two bio-based polymers that are particularly important for the packaging sector. On show will be Various new PLA blends, which guarantee optimum product protection as packaging films. We are also working on new formulations from PLA-based polyester urethanes as a starting point for bio-based hotmelt adhesives, that are sustainable and biodegradable and do not interfere with paper recycling. An important goal of the research approaches is to increase the proportion of PLA in the packaging sector, not least to make the material recycling of PLA more economically attractive and thus further improve the sustainability of PLA.

Starch-based polymers have been pushed back in the packaging sector in recent years. This is set to change with the development of thermoplastically mouldable starch esters. The big advantage of this group of materials is that they can be used to produce not only films, but also adhesives and coatings. Starch-based dispersion adhesives are also currently being researched for folding carton and corrugated cardboard packaging. The aim here is to integrate the bio-based adhesive well into existing production processes.
