It is not always clear to consumers at first glance which seal and which label stands for what. The Agency for Renewable Resources, together with the Institute for Ecological Economy Research, has now published an online quality mark finder.

„Umweltzeichen Kompakt“ lists quality labels for various product groups which, on the one hand, take renewable raw materials into account in their catalogue of criteria and, on the other hand, fulfil the legal requirements for use in public tenders. They can therefore be used as proof of quality, e.g. for desired environmental standards.

The search tool is primarily an offer for employees in authorities and public institutions, but is also aimed at end consumers and anyone interested in environmentally friendly shopping.

„Every purchase counts when it comes to achieving our climate targets - this applies to private households and the public sector alike,“ says FNR-Managing Director Andreas Schütte. „Sustainability must also be reflected in administrative action. Cities, municipalities, federal and state authorities can In the procurement of products and the awarding of contracts to service providers, we are taking decisive steps towards climate neutrality. to set. „Public procurement law expressly permits the use of quality labels in public tenders to prove that sustainability requirements have been met,“ emphasises IÖW researcher Christina Klusch. „The ‚Ecolabel Compact‘ database is intended to help procurers identify suitable quality labels. This can facilitate the preparation of tender documents.“

Sustainable purchasing takes into account ecological as well as social and innovative criteria. The labels listed in the FNR's Quality Label Finder focus specifically on environmental aspects and the options for procuring products made from renewable, plant-based materials - in the sense of a future bioeconomy. The bioeconomy aims to achieve a fundamental change from a fossil-based economy to a sustainable economy through the utilisation of bio-based resources.
