Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) has launched the first food trays made from 100 per cent recycled PET (rPET), which is obtained exclusively from trays. They were developed as part of the company's Tray2Tray initiative.

Until now, trays for food packaging have been produced using ever higher proportions of recycled PET material. However, the newly introduced kp tray is the first to be made entirely from recycled shell material. This milestone is the direct result of Klöckner Pentaplast's Tray2Tray initiative, which aims to rewrite PET recycling rules.

„This achievement is a major breakthrough in the packaging industry and shows what is possible with the right combination of expertise and technology. Most of the rPET in the material cycle comes from plastic bottles, of which only 30 per cent goes into food trays, and most of this is not recycled. As a result, countless tonnes of rPET tray material is wasted every year. kp Tray2Tray is challenging this by a robust circulation system for PET flakes from trays creates. We work together with suppliers to a separate supply stream of recycled PET from trays which can be used to produce further trays.“

Thanks to this breakthrough, kp's customers have access to a fully recyclable tray solution for food packaging. kp's supply chain is RecyClass-certified ensuring the safety, quality and traceability of its PCR packaging solutions. The new 100 per cent kp Tray2Tray packaging is ideal for companies looking to control their costs associated with eco-tax and plastic tax legislation, as well as for companies looking to advance their ESG strategies, the manufacturer said.

Thomas Kure Jakobsen added: „We don't just want to usher in a new era of sustainability for plastic trays, we want to start a new era. One of the biggest benefits of the partnership with kp and the use of kp Tray2Tray content is that it is a new way of using plastic trays, that it is a perfect drop-in solution, so that the changeover is simple and packaging performance is not affected.“
