The three plastics associations GKV Gesamtverband Kunststoffverarbeitende Industrie, PlasticsEurope Deutschland and VDMA Fachverband Kunststoff- und Gummimaschinen presented their joint initiative „We are plastics“ today.

The associations want to join forces in favour of greater ecological, social and economic sustainability. This is unique in the value chain. Including the five GKV associations The partners are committed to the circular economy mission and want to actively drive change in the plastics industry.

Open communication plays a key role here. With More facts and information on the transformation of the industry - The players want to achieve a greater appreciation of plastics as a material of the future, for example through the latest studies on the transformation towards a circular economy. The initiative's new online platform should also contribute to this.

Fhe future is bright for plastics

The plastics industry is changing: together, the companies in the plastics industry and their customers want to Consume fewer resources and significantly reduce environmental pollution. In addition to new raw materials for plastics production, such as biomass or CO2, plastic should be recycled as completely as possible. This already works very well with PET bottles or industry-specific collection systems such as those for window profiles, but by no means everywhere.

The industry and many initiatives are working flat out on sustainable solutions, most of which are in close co-operation with users, politics and NGOs. Some of it is already running: Eco Design for sustainable product design, research collaborations for chemical recycling, the Alliance Zero granulate loss to prevent environmental pollution or the initiative EARTH for the recycling of agricultural films.

We are plastics wants to share the enormous wealth of experience of its more than 3,000 member companies in the future and network individual initiatives more closely, Think and act outside the box, The aim is to support members in the transformation and also jointly represent positions on shaping the circular economy.

We are plastics in dialogue

For the associations, the fact that in the past it was mainly the plastics industry that was talked about rather than with is also due to the fact that they were not always easy to find. This should change with the new Platform change: A particularly important concern for We are plastics dialogue with consumers and NGOs. At the same time, the associations are aware of the problems associated with plastics at the end of their useful life - particularly through littering and discharges into waterways and oceans. These Challenges can only be overcome by working together. This is also a concern of the initiative.

While the public debate on plastics has so far focussed on the undoubtedly important issue of waste, the associations are contributing other equally important aspects such as New materials, processes and resource efficiency. Plastics are essential for value creation, participation, prosperity and, above all, climate protection. One focus of the website is therefore on innovations that inspire through their more sustainable use of the material of the future in a functioning circular economy.
