The family business Kultasuklaa manufactures chocolate products and wanted to change its packaging. The company's truffles are now packaged in fresh fibre board from Metsä Board.

Chocolate is sensitive to light, heat and air. This is why confectionery and truffles are traditionally packed individually in plastic wrappers or in plastic trays in a box. With a new packaging solution for its truffles the chocolate manufacturer is now reducing the use of plastics and thus lowering its environmental impact of its products - without compromising the shelf life of the valuable ingredients. It was also important to the company that the the raw materials used for the packaging are sourced locally and produced in an ethical manner become.

„Many of the raw materials we use for our chocolate products come to us from far away. That's why it's particularly important for us to be able to produce the packaging locally from local raw materials.“

Yuri Kaskela, one of the managing directors at Kultasuklaa

The company chose the following materials for the packaging MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB. The Barrier carton is suitable for direct contact with food and is produced at the Kyro plant. The material is lightweight but stable and, with its light-coloured surface, produces excellent printing results in offset, flexo and digital printing. Thanks to its dispersion barrier coating, it also offers medium-strength protection against grease and moisture, which is required for chocolate products. This made it possible to dispense with separate plastic parts and the entire truffle packaging is now easily recyclable.

In addition to Metsä Board, numerous other companies were also involved in the production process: The structure of the packaging was created by CadPack, the layout was designed by DesignCompany and the printing was carried out by Markprint. Kultasuklaa's wish was for a Packaging that stands out from traditional packaging thanks to its shape. With the distinctive hexagonal shape, the design team also aimed to create a solution that would also encourage consumers to buy them as gifts. The new shape also ensures that the round truffles can be packed close together without wasting space. And thanks to a easy opening and closing of the lid, the new packaging offers safe storage even after opening for the sensitive chocolate products.

Different layouts were designed for the various flavours. The hexagonal shape allowed for several printing areas, leaving enough space for the brand message in addition to the prescribed food labelling. The collaboration between the various partners resulted in a functional and striking packaging solution that reduces plastic at the same time.

„It was great to see how companies of different sizes worked together on this project. It feels good that Metsä Board also recognises smaller players like Kultasuklaa with its service.“
