Target is the first major US retailer to launch a wine range in paper-based bottles from Frugalpac - with significant savings on its carbon footprint.

The US retailer Target has opened a new chapter in sustainable packaging: Target is now the first major supermarket chain operator in the USA to offer ein wine assortment in paper bottles on. The packaging solution known as the Frugal Bottle comes from the British company Frugalpac and was honoured with the King's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category.

The range includes four types of wine under the Collective Good brand - Red Blend, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio. The wines are sold in around 1,200 Target shops. Technology: cardboard instead of glass

The Frugal Bottle consists of 94 per cent recycled paper and contains a Food-safe plastic bag as inner container. The weight is just 83 grams - around five times less than a conventional glass bottle. An independent life cycle analysis by Intertek puts the carbon footprint of the Frugal Bottle at just 91.9 g CO₂e, compared to 440 g CO₂e for standard glass bottles - a reduction of 84 per cent.

Display

Target has ordered a total of 256,000 bottles, which, according to the manufacturer, corresponds to a saving of around 98 tonnes of CO₂e.

The wines were sourced and imported by the Californian company Latitude Wines. They were bottled by the Monterey Wine Company, which found the paper-based bottles so convincing that they have since become the standard. itself has its own frugal bottle filling line. The production capacity is over 2.5 million bottles per year.

Recycling and design

Another advantage: the Frugal Bottle is easy to recycle. The plastic bag inside can be separated from the cardboard body and disposed of separately. The materials are fully recyclable. The bottle also enables 360-degree branding, which ensures maximum visibility on the shelf.

In addition to the reduction in CO₂ emissions, the Frugal Bottle also features bottles have significantly lower water consumption values than glass bottles. It also uses up to 77 per cent less plastic than a comparable bottle made from 100 per cent recycled plastic.
