The L 310 conveyor belt labeller from Multvac ensures automatic full-wrap labelling of fish and seafood packaging.

The variety of fish and seafood products is almost endless - as is the variety of packaging types and materials. However, an effective presentation at the POS is only possible with a Product and brand-appropriate packaging design, that harmonises with the labelling. With full wrap labelling, the Multivac an innovative solution that leaves a lasting impression in the chiller cabinet.

Fish and seafood are usually packed in skin packaging, MAP trays, aluminium trays or tins. Fresh or frozen products are usually labelled with a simple top/bottom label, a flat solid cardboard box and cardboard sleeves. The latter enclose the product like a sleeve - they are pushed onto an outer edge of the pack as a cardboard slipcase or enclose the entire surface of the product like an envelope. The problem with this: The label often does not correspond to the value of the product. If cardboard sleeves are used, manual processing is very time-consuming and cost-intensive.

Labeller with high output

The L 310 Full Wrap conveyor belt labeller is an efficient and attractive alternative. The flexible model with its patented, servo-driven press-on brushes enables the Automatic labelling with self-adhesive labels on up to four sides of a pack. The maximum label width is up to 500 mm and the labelling output is up to 120 packs per minute. Depending on the requirements, different thermal transfer or thermal inkjet printers can be integrated into the labeller.

The automated labelling process benefits producers and packers in terms of precision, process reliability and, above all, throughput. For even higher output, the labeller can be equipped with a Zero downtime function labelling. An optional labelling and print control system ensures that only perfectly labelled products reach the market.

Focus on sustainability

The company offers a broad portfolio of suitable labelling and adhesive materials. In addition to PP and PET labels, materials made from paper or other renewable raw materials are also available. This is because consumers today are increasingly focussing on recyclable and therefore sustainable packaging concepts - especially when it comes to natural products and high-quality food.

„By adapting the label material to the packaging material, we create a single-variety pack that fulfils the requirements for recyclability. If we also use removable or washable adhesives, the individual packaging components can be easily separated after use and fed into the respective recycling streams.“ Michael Reffke, Product Manager at Multivac Marking & Inspection

Particularly lightweight labelling material also reduces the transport weight of the packs along the entire supply chain - and therefore also improves CO2-balance sheet. „Compared to cardboard sleeves Reduce the weight of the band by half with the full-wrap label, Even greater material savings are possible with cardboard envelopes,“ says the labelling expert.

Full-wrap labelling offers maximum flexibility

There are also virtually no limits to the application scenarios and design variants of full-wrap labelling. The possibilities range from the sleeve for skin packaging to the full-wrap envelope with die-cutting and overlapping to the full-surface label, for example for ready meals packed in trays. Even when using low-cost material, the packaging concept impresses with its high-quality Look & Feel, as the design, type of material and print can be customised to suit the product and brand.

Depending on requirements, additional functionalities such as Perforation, opening aids, viewing windows or adhesive-free zones be integrated. The portfolio of Multivac includes material thicknesses from 70 to 130 g/m², so that each product can be attractively presented according to its value.

Added value through comprehensive information

Last but not least, full wrap labelling offers a large information and communication area. If required, an additional label can also be applied to the bottom of the packaging on the same machine. Michael Reffke: „In this respect, full wrap labelling far surpasses classic top/bottom labelling. It is also in no way inferior to carton sleeves and is significantly more efficient than full carton labelling.“
