59 per cent of managers in Germany are convinced that their company is doing a good job of adapting its own processes to the constant changes. Conversely, four out of ten companies are unable to keep up with the pace of the current upheavals.

These are the results of the study „Success in transition“. The management consultancy Staufen surveyed more than 400 top executives at German companies.

„Companies are finding it difficult to prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. However, the Will to change clearly recognisable. But it takes more than meticulous adherence to processes to survive change.“
Wilhelm Goschy, Management Board of Staufen AG

Based on the data collected, the German companies have an average of Change Readiness Index (CRI) of 55 on a scale of 1 to 100 points - three points less than two years ago. This slightly negative development is not dramatic, but clearly shows that companies still have a long way to go.

Almost four-fifths of the companies surveyed state that processes are documented in a comprehensible manner and the respective responsibilities are clearly defined. However, less than two thirds systematically adapt to current developments and regularly scrutinise their processes.

Challenge: Change

In addition, many companies are not fully convinced of the future viability of their processesOnly every second company considers them to be flexible at all and reviews them with a view to future challenges.

„There is a great desire to counter the complexity and rapid pace of change in our world. But not all organisations manage to actually adapt their processes to change.“
Wilhelm Goschy, Management Board of Staufen AG

59 per cent of respondents are of the opinion that they are doing well to very well in setting the course for the future - less than in 2017. More than a third of companies therefore feel they are lagging behind today.

How can companies prepare for change?

„An important success factor for all companies is Lean management. It creates learning organisations that enable companies to adapt quickly to changes and challenges.“
Wilhelm Goschy, Management Board of Staufen AG

This is also shown by the study: With the consistent implementation of lean management change readiness is demonstrably improved in all areas of a company. Every increase in the lean maturity level leads to an increase in the CRI by 7 points. This is proof: Lean management makes companies more adaptable and points the way to a sustainable organisation.
