The increasing use of 2D codes on labels and packaging is opening up new potential for converters to expand their business. According to Domino Printing Sciences, brands are particularly interested in applications for traceability, product authentication and digital consumer engagement.
However, a recent survey by Appetite Creative shows that over a third of companies that do not yet use networked packaging are not yet using it, Knowledge gaps in relation to the technology have. This creates space for processors to position themselves with complementary services. These include integrated design and printing services, the implementation of QR code campaigns or support with data management - for example, when using data-rich GS1-compliant codes for regulatory requirements such as the digital product passport.

„This is a great opportunity for converters to expand the scope of their services beyond just 2D code printing. Those who understand and utilise the technology will be well equipped to meet the changing needs of brands and offer value-added services in the areas of design, digital marketing and product authentication. In this way, they gain a competitive advantage and lay the foundations for long-term business development.“
Expertise in printing variable and serialised QR codes is particularly in demand. These enable precise traceability of individual batches and products. The prerequisite for their use is a reliable interaction of print templates, data integration and code verification. Vision systems for quality assurance help to avoid faulty or unreadable codes.
Secure QR codes are also becoming increasingly important in sensitive sectors such as luxury goods and electronics. These cannot be copied and offer increased product security. Processors who are involved in this area should pay attention to Certified printing processes and consistently high print quality pay attention.
Domino also sees opportunities in the Supplementing traditional printing services with digital elements - for example, the development of landing pages or analysis platforms for analysing scan data. For processors who already offer packaging design, this is an obvious next step.
Regardless of the strategic orientation, the reliable production of high-quality 2D codes remains a key element for market success.
